Open Source
Open Source is concept supported by a legal document called the General Public License. Let's give some practical examples here:

Suppose Jack and Jill own a company together. They purchase the Microsoft™ Office Suite as part of the company's Inventory. This purchase is for a License and the that license is issued under restrictions.
Such restrictions state that they do not own this software. Most certainly they cannot resell copies. Such a restricted contract can be called a end-user license agreements (EULA). If Jack and Jill divide their company, they cannot divide the software.

If we were to develop a website or a desktop software application for Jack and Jill, they could have full control over the website or application. Copies of the website could be resold by either of them, either with or without modifications. Also, they can resell or redistribute under derivatives of the General Public License.

  • The Firefox Web browser is based on the open source release of code from Netscape Navigator.
    Firefox remains an open-source project.
  • The current Macintosh Operating System is derived from an open-source
Operating System called BSD similar to Linux.
Macintosh has chosen to keep this derivative as closed source.
They have the right to do so.
